Two piece sleeve pattern drafting course

Two piece sleeve pattern drafting course

Course description

Learn how to turn a one-piece sleeve into a tailored two-piece sleeve following the same drafting method used by professional pattern makers and tailors.

What you'll learn

  • How to tilt the sleeve to follow the natural curve of the arm.
  • Where to position the inner and outer seams so the sleeve rolls slightly inward – like the arm does.
  • Perfect your sleeve's fit with illustrated pattern adjustments.

Plus! Find out how to add a sleeve vent with buttons.

Why CLIQD is different

Most two-piece sleeve drafting tutorials simply give you one set of measurements to follow.

This course goes further by explaining the logic behind the drafting method and the different measurements professional pattern makers use — so you can confidently adapt the sleeve to suit your own design.

What's in the course

Simply following the illustrated, step-by-step instructions in the sections below:

  1. Trace your sleeve
  2. Fold underarm seams on top of centre line
  3. Straighten elbow & bicep/underarm lines
  4. Cut along elbow line & open
  5. Draft outer & inner seam
  6. Separate pattern pieces
  7. Hem finish
  8. Label pattern
  9. Toile & fit your pattern

Measurements are in cm (metric) and inches (imperial)

Why use a two-piece sleeve?

One-piece sleeves are straight, while our arms naturally rest with a slight bend at the elbow. Splitting the sleeve into two pieces allows you to create an “L-shape” that follows the natural curve of the arm.

This makes the sleeve:

  • More comfortable to wear
  • Improves range of motion
  • Reduces wrinkles around the elbow
  • Creates a cleaner, more tailored fit

Who's it for

Two-piece sleeves are one of the most intimidating patterns to draft — but they’re also one of the best ways to improve the fit, movement and shape of a jacket.

This course is designed for:

  • Fashion designers wanting to create professionally tailored jackets and coats.
  • Home sewists ready to move beyond commercial patterns.
  • Pattern makers wanting to better understand tailoring and sleeve construction.
  • Anyone intimidated by sleeve drafting who wants a clearer, more logical approach.

No tailoring experience needed — just a basic understanding of pattern making and a one-piece sleeve block to work from.

What you need

For this drafting course, you’ll need a one-piece sleeve to use as the base to create your two-piece sleeve.

Don't have a one-piece sleeve?

Create your own using CLIQD’s One Piece Sleeve Drafting Course. You’ll learn how to:

  • Calculate correct cap height for your design.
  • Draft sleeve head curves for different silhouettes – from figure-hugging tight to oversized sweatshirts.
  • Make pattern adjustments to fix common fit issues.
